The Club currently operates 4 session times for Club swimmers to train once per week for 60 minutes. New members are generally over 8 years old, able to swim 100m Freestyle continuously, and at least 25m Breaststroke and Backstroke and familiar with Fly.
Session times are 3.30pm and 6.15pm on Mondays and Thursdays, and are coached by volunteers. Tawa Swimming Club is committed to quality coaching, supporting volunteers to gain the NZ Swim Teacher Award and further training as appropriate. Two of our volunteer coaches have been awarded Volunteer Coach of the Year, in 2016 and 2017 respectively, at Swimming Wellington Annual Awards.
Our Club programme is focused on developing swimming capabilities while remembering that many children this age (8-12 years approximately) are balancing swimming with other activities, and that swimming needs to be enjoyable for children to want to keep engaging in it. Our programme balances regular training with race training and social events, and we make opportunities for youngsters to see positive teenage role models in swimming. Any Club member can compete from the time of joining and competitive swimming is encouraged. Many swimmers progress into swimming squads from Club sessions. Direct entry into squads is also possible for some swimmers.
